Assault At Hilltop

George Frost Ravenfield, was charged with assaulting John Longden, of the same place, on the 18th July.

Mr. Badliley appeared for the prosecution, and Mr. C. Hall defended.

John Longden said on Saturday last he and the defendant left the Hilltop Public House, Conisborough, to go to their homes at Ravenfield. They both were sober. There had been some disturbance at Conisborough respecting some cricketers, in which they both took part.

When they had got a mile on their journey prisoner struck complainant a severe blow on the back of the head, knocking him to the floor insensible. When he came round Frost has disappeared. Complainant then went to some cottage, and a man named Thomas Cullen went part of the way home with him.

Thomas Cullen said he lived at Thursby. Last Saturday night, about 10-30 complainant came to his house and told him he had been assaulted by Frost. He appeared very dazed but he was sober. A little time before he had heard the two men talking as they passed his door.

For the defence it was said that there had been no fighting at all, they had only had a few words.

The chairman said there was no doubt that the complainant had had a knock on the head but there was not sufficient evidence to say how he got it. – Case dismissed.
