“Banker” at Conisborough.

Charles Henry Harrop, Conisborough, Jacob Hartley Alfred Greenhalgh, Walter Fowether, Ernest Foweather, John Robinson, Glasshands, New Conisborough, were summoned for gaming cards at Conisborough, on Sunday the 8th inst

Robinson, Greenhaigh and Walter Foweather appeared in answer to the summons, and pleaded not guilty

P.C. Jenkinson stated that on Sunday, the 8th inst at 4:30 PM he was on duty in Glasshouse Lane New Conisborough, and there saw the defendants with several others gaming with cards at a game called “banker,” and saw money change hands several times.

PC Walton said that when he served the summonses the defendants had said. “If we had been faster runners we should not have been caught.”

The defence was that the real culprits were another group of young men who did not run and had the wisdom to remain on the arrival of the police.

A fine of 2/6 and 5/6 costs was imposed in each case.
