Bank’s New Premises at Conisbrough

Since 1909 some of the people of Conisbrough and Denaby have been patiently going to a small 2 roomed building in Church Street, Conisbrough, to carry out their banking transactions.

But now things have changed. Instead of the two roomed Midland bank premises, there is a magnificently designed branch, standing on the site of the Golden Globe Cinema.

The new premises are more spacious, more hygienic and certainly more luxurious than before, with room for two cashiers and with a well designed interview room. There are also staff facilities – a room equipped with cooking facilities. The new branch has been built not only because of the inadequacy of the present facilities, but also because of the increase and the potential increase of business in the area.

Increased Services.

Manager of the Midland Bank at Mexborough, Mr J. Spencer, explain, “In my view the new bank provides increased space for customers and staff which have been required for some considerable time, and I feel certain that this will assist in increasing our services to our customers and should attract new business to the branch.”

Mr Spencer is in charge of the sub branch at Conisbrough, and a sub branch clerk is sent every day to supervise the existing counter staff.

The larger premises could in future also provide a new source of employment in Conisbrough, for there is room for a staff of 10 without need for further alteration of the new staff premises. At present, the staff comprises a sub- office clerk and guard and an additional cashier at busy periods during the month.

Midland Blue.

Midland Bank blue is the dominant colour – not unnaturally – in the decor. The banking hall is blue floored, with two side walls in blue, and the back wall papered in a dark blue.

Countertops and screening are in afrormosia with ebonised top rails, and the premises are lit by ceiling mounted fluorescent fittings.

But perhaps the most attractive and outstanding part of the new subbranch is the facade.

It includes a window in striped frosted glass with an aluminium transom. The modern style incorporates naco louvres for ventilation.

Provision has been made for additional staff when the volume of business warrants this, and with the credit transfer system of payment becoming more and more popular, it should not be long before this is necessary.

Staff and customers alike should certain monthly keep warm during the first months of the new branches opening – the winter months – for electric oil filled radiators have been placed at strategic points throughout the building.
