Beacon Lights
The question of having beacon lights is being considered in South Yorkshire as in other parts of the United Kingdom, and it will be one very interesting way of recognising the Jubilee day.
There are many very suitable eminences for such illuminations.
About the highest elevation I can call to mind as the agricultural village of Lowton en le Morthern – said to be so prominent that on a clear summer day the spire of the ancient church is discernible at sea!
Then there is the famous Hoober stand, on the Wentworth estate not far from Lord Fitzwilliam’s residence, from which a commanding view is gained for many miles along the Dearne Valley.
Not far from Conisborough Castle too stands a high hill, where visitors may often be seen viewing York Minster by the aid of a pocket telescope.
Such geographical points as these – and there are plenty of others – may readily be made useful in the way indicated, and I shall be glad to hear that the ancient custom will hereabouts be carried into effect.
