Bellringers.
The peal of bells rung last Thursday at Conisbrough Parish Church by a team of campanologists gathered from Sheffield, Rotherham, Doncaster. Braithwell and Conisbrough was being rung for the first time and was named “Conisbrough Surprise.” Mr. Milton Fowler of Highfields Road, Conisbrough, one of the team, said that there was very little unusual, to a ringer, in the fact, since there are some hundreds of peals which have never been rung, or are without names.
The peal last Thursday, lasting for three hours, involved some 5,000 changes, without making the same change twice. Three hours is the customary length of a peal, and Mr. Fowler rings an average of about one a fortnight, doing nearly 30 last year.
Such is the enthusasm of some of these ringers, however, that they will occasionally accomplish up to 120 a year, and often two or three a day. The team which rang on Thursday have made campanology a hobby, and travel round the district, ringing at various churches. Mr. Fowler Is also a regular member of the Conisbrough Parish Church team.
