Betting House
Gladys Crookes, 2, Maltby Street, Denaby, was fined at Doncaster on Tuesday for keeping a betting house.
Inspector Wolfe said the premises, which were at the rear of a shop, were kept under observation on April 10th, 11th and 12th, when a total of 94 persons, 27 being children, were seen to visit.
The following day the police raided the house and found Mrs. Crookes sat at a table on which was a quantity of betting material and 24s. 6d. in cash. Thirty-one slips related to 110 bets covering £2 9s.
When charged defendant replied: “That is all there is. The reason I have not much money is because I have many ‘strap’ bets.”
Defendant admitted she was doing this for “a big bookmaker” who would pay the fine for her.
