Big Denaby Scheme to Start Now.

To Cost £16,000.

Interviewed by a representative of the “South Yorkshire Times” at the close of the meeting respecting the Denaby Main streets scheme which is to provide employment for between 60 and 70 men, Mr. H. Thirlwall, the surveyor, said : “We have been struggling for practically twelve months to get through this proposal for re-conditioning the private streets of Denaby, owned mainly by the Colliery Company, though there are also smaller owners.

These are private streets and the liability for their maintenance, repair, and cleansing at present lies with the property owners The brunt of this has been borne for many years by the Colliery Company. It is considered advisable by the Council that a change should be made and that the Council should become responsible for the future maintenance and care of the streets, but before this could be done they had to be brought into a reasonable condition that would enable the Council to take them over under their statutory powers.

Arrangements have been arrived at with all the property owners for carrying out the proposals. In effect the property owners are paying half the cost of the work which consists of sewering and re-surfacing of the carriage ways, the repair of the pavements. The other half of the cost is being paid by the Council under Section 81 of the Public Health Act. 1925, and the Council have succeeded in obtaining a grant from the Unemployment Grants Committee on the usual terms towards their part of the contribution.

The estimated cost of the whole works is £16.000 and we have to get it finished in a year. We have definitely got to make a start before the end of the year. We hope to start before Christmas.
