Boxing at Denaby

Frank Lane was recompensed for previous disappointment with an excellent programme at Denaby, on Friday, and a record crowd.

It was a night of nights, for Ellis as shares (Denaby) who cleverly outpointed Billy Yates over 12 rounds. Whether Yates can “do the weight” for a return fight he will still have his work cut out for he is not the boxer he was two years ago.

Ashurst gained his victory mainly by the use of a consistent left. When Yates was fighting hard for a knockout in the closing rounds he found Ashurst tough and ready.

Young Sharpies (Denaby), won on a foul against Kid Fox (Chesterfield), in the third round. Fox had rained a comfortable lead when he accidently landed a low blow and the referee had no option.

Gilbert Marsh (Sheffield) beat Paddy Dainty (Denaby) on points over six rounds; and Jim Conland (Denaby) beat Young Greaves (Sheffield) on points over four rounds. The referee was Mr. Charlie Brennan (Sheffield).

Another important fight likely to take place at Denaby shortly is one between Ashurst and Cowley (Thurnscoe). But the biggest attraction to Denaby will be the meeting of Ashurst and Firman. The latter will be making his first appearance in the ring since his accident twelve months ago. Owing to inability to find sparring partners he has had to leave the local “stable” and is training at home and at the Plant Hotel.
