Fourteen Bout Boxing Bill at Bath’s Hall Next Thursday

A new club and a new venture: those are the keynotes of next Thursday evenings 14 bout boxing program to be staged at Denaby Baths Hall by Denaby and Cadeby ABC. The man behind this big attraction is secretary Mr E. Oxer, the deputy at Denaby colliery, who has done so much over the years to encourage young boxers in this area.

Mr Oxer told me on Thursday (writes the sports editor) that the ringside was already sold out, and that the three shilling tickets were selling quickly. He was warmly appreciated of the assistance the National coal board ABA had extended to this venture. Arrangements have been going ahead for some eight weeks for this program which will feature as an opener an exhibition junior contest between two of the youngest members of the club, T. Joyce and W. Heenan. George Lacey of Doncaster, who was NCB national welterweight champion last year, meets Mel Gannon of Steel Peach and Tozer, and Colin Wilcox, British junior ABA finalist in 1955, is matched with E. Barraclough, of Steel Peach and Tozer, who also has an excellent record.

British ABA finalist and England representative, J Cunningham, meets S Pearson (Doncaster) over four two-minute rounds at light middleweight and also on the bill will be P. O’Rourke of Denaby and Cadeby Colliery’s ABC., for whom an opponent was being selected this week. J. O’ Rourke, his younger brother, is meeting T. Tyas (Steel, Peach and Tozer) over three rounds in a junior contest. The program is timed to start at 6:45.
