Breach of Rules at Denaby Main

Ephraim Summerscales, dataller, Denaby Main, and Ernest Page, dataller, Conisborough, were summoned for having contravened colliery special rule 106, on January 20th.

The offence consisted in the defendants having proceeded along an incline road in the Cadeby mine, without the permission of the manager, under manager, or deputy.

The two men were at one end of a jenny, and having waited there a few moments while there was a running of corves, which were sent forward by the jennier, they sent off running along the road. The jennier called after them, but they refused to return

John Bell, brakesman at Cadeby Main gave evidence, stating that defendants absolutely refused to return.

The defendants were ordered to pay 5s and costs.

Tom Kelly, a driver, Denaby Main, was fined 2/6 and costs for having committed a breach of colliery special rule 68.

Defendant pleaded guilty.

The case was one which might have been attended with serious consequences. It appears that it was defendant’s duty to take several corves up an incline, where others were shunting, and to see that they would taken sufficiently close to the others to allow them to be automatically attached to them.

That he failed to do the result being that the corves came back down, the inclined road, although actually no damage was done.
