Breach of Rules at Denaby.

January 1912

Mexborough & Swinton Times – Saturday 06 January 1912

Breach of Rules at Denaby.

George Bass, pony driver, of Swinton was charged with contravened special rule 4 at the Cadeby colliery on November 8.

Mr Frank Allen, the prosecution, stated that defendant along with others were guilty of committing an act likely to endanger the life of persons in the mine. It appears that when the defendant was working the roof was supported by props, along the top of which were placed pieces of timber. Defendant was seen to throw stones at the roof. This took no effect, so he procured a drag and hammered at the props, with the result that the props fell and about 13 tubs of dirt fell. This stopped the working of that part of the mine and also impeded the ventilation.

It was a dangerous practice, and the defendant had a narrow escape of being buried.

Defendant pleaded guilty, but said that he was only “trying” the roof, because he thought it was not safe.

Defending, was fined 40/– inclusive, or 21 days.
