Breach Of The Lottery Act At Conisbro’
A Sheffielder, who gave the name of Alf. Smith, and said he was a general dealer in the city, was charged at Doncaster on Saturday with having committed a breach of the Lottery Act, at Conisbro’, on Good Friday.
Two police officers watched the man offering, wrapped up in paper, which he had in a wooden box in front of him. He pretended to put a threepenny piece in one of the paper parcels, and offer the public the chance of selection. But no threepenny piece was found.
The officers apprehended the man. The prisoner asked the magistrates to be lenient with him, as he was a widower with a family, and was in poverty as well as being in delicate health.
— Fined £1, including costs.
