Breaches of the Peace

John Handley, miner, New Conisboro’, was accused of having committed a breach of the peace by fighting at Conisboro’ on Jan. 30.

P.C. Taylor stated that at 10.10 p.m. on the date in question he was on duty in Loversall Street in company with Sergt. Horton, when he saw a large assembly of people. Upon going towards the crowd witness observed the defendants fighting. Petley was stripped to the waist. Witness saw several blows struck, and when within a few yards of the defendants he saw them fall to the ground and strike blows whilst in that position.

Sergt. Horton gave corroborative evidence.

Defendants, who did not appear, were each ordered to pay the costs.

A similar charge was preferred against Wm. Gorman, miner, Denaby, and Fred Foster, trammer, Mexboro’, the offence having been committed at Mexboro’ the same day.

Gorman appeared and pleaded guilty.

P.C. Woodward stated the facts, and each defendant was ordered to pay the costs.
