Brothers in Germany

Two brothers serving with the 1st. Battalion, the Green Howards in Germary (left) Lance Corporal Ray Gascoyne aged 20 and (right) Private Walter Gascoyne aged 27, both regular soldiers. Their mother lives at 20 Cliff View, Denaby Main.

Our picture shows Lance Corporal Gascoyne teaching his older brother the finer points of the 3″ mortar.

Both were educated at Conisbrough Secondary Modern School and before joining the Army, Walter worked as a furnace hand and Ray as a Bricklayer’s labourer. Between them they have served with The Green Howards in Egypt, Sudan, Hong Kong and now Europe.

Walter, who is a keen fisherman at home, was delighted to find the trout fishing in Bavaria just as good. He was there recently on exercise.

Ray, who is engaged to Miss Jackie Walton, of 24, Cutts Avenue, Wath, said of the Army, “It gets you around, and I like meeting people.
