Brothers Promptitude and Bravery Saved Denaby Boy
When nine-year-old Brian Galvin of Annerley Street Denaby Main was struggling for his life after falling in the South Yorkshire Navigation Canal at Mexborough last July, he was saved by two men – one of whom dived into the canal and dragged him into the side by his hair.
At Doncaster West Riding Court last Friday the men, Joseph Leslie Dudhill (42) of Scott Avenue, Conisbrough and his brother Frederick Dudhill (40) of Maple Road, Mexborough were presented with testimonials from the Royal Humane Society by the chairman Mr F.S. Newborn.
Mr Newborn said that Joseph dived into the canal after taking off his coat and trousers and he was then aided by his brother who applied artificial respiration for a considerable time.
“There is no doubt,” said Mr Newborn, “that but for the brothers action the boy would have been drowned.”
