Brother’s Suit Was Taken by Denaby Man

Investigating the disappearance of a Denaby man’s suit from his wardrobe, police found it had been taken by his brother and pawned for £2, Doncaster West Riding Magistrates heard on Tuesday.

Arnold White (35) labourer, of Ravenfield Street, Denaby, pleaded guilty to stealing the suit worth £10 belonging to his brother, Norman White, of the same address.

He was fined £10 and ordered to repay £2 obtained from pawning the suit.  “You’re a lucky man not to be going to prison,” said the Chairman, Mr. F. S. Newborn.

When White first appeared before the court, Detective-Inspector A. E. Garnett told the Magistrate that the defendant took the suit without his brother’s knowledge or permission, pawned it, then spent the money in Doncaster.

On Tuesday, White told the Bench that he had a job to go to in Scarborough, and said that if there had been paper and pencil handy, he would have left a note for his brother telling him he had taken a suit.
