Burning Fatality at New Conisborough

On Wednesday at the Denaby Main Hotel, Mr FE Nicholson, coroner for the Doncaster district, held an inquest upon the body of George Burgess, miner of 69 Firbeck Street, New Conisborough.

The deceased came downstairs Sunday morning between seven and 8 o’clock before his parents had risen. He lit a candle and then, attired in only his shirt, went into the kitchen to wash himself, when he contrived to upset the candle and set fire to his shirt.

His screams brought down his parents, who extinguish the flames and took him to Mr Taylor, chemist, who dressed the burns prior to the arrival of Dr Gilchrist, who subsequently attended him until his death, which occurred on Monday morning.

A verdict of “accidental death” was returned.
