Denaby Man Driven to Suicide
Sacrificed to Duty
Frank Wood of Braithwell Street, Denaby Main committed suicide by drowning himself in the River Don on the Saturday following the disaster.
His widow gave evidence that her husband had no trouble before the colliery explosion in which he had lost a brother in law.
On Wednesday he had worked down the pit on the task of stretchering out the bodies. On returning home he had said to his wife that the sight was horrible. ‘I shall never forget it if I live to be a hundred; I shall never go down the pit again’
He never slept in his bed again. ‘He would just come home, take a cup of tea and say; I will look sharp down to our Mary’s to comfort his widowed sister.
