Capacity Crowd for Last Night’s Boxing at Denaby
A capacity crowd at Denaby Baths Hall last night saw some excellent boxing with well matched contests, and occasionally poor fights with “wrestling” thrown in.
Former blue heavyweight champion Bruce Woodcock, was amongst the spectators. The program is first ever to be staged by Denaby and Cadeby Collieries Amateur Boxing Club.
Best fight of the evening was a four round flyweight contest between C Wilcox, of Denaby and Cadeby Collieries, ABC British junior ABA finalist in 1955, and E Barraclough, Northern counties finalist 1955, and East and West riding champion in 1955.
Wilcox looked the better boxer early on but soon looked tired after a battering from Barraclough weakened him. The last round, however, Wilcox fought back magnificently, but again weakened. After a flurry of body blows he went down he was counted out by referee Mr H O’Neill of Sheffield. The decision was not well received, though taking the fight as a whole Barraclough was a worthy winner.
George Lacey, of Elmfield House, Doncaster, this years NCB welterweight champion, was too good for D Callon of Steel, Peach and Tozer who came in as a last-minute substitute. Callan was knocked out in the last round.
Other results included: T Lavin (Elmfield house,) beat G Marsden (Hickleton Main) featherweight; P Mensiah (Pitsmoor working men’s club, Sheffield) beat R Elks (Denaby and Cadeby) welterweight; F Shirley (Denaby and Cadeby) beat F Barnes (Doncaster Plant works) lightweight; S Pearson (Elmfield house) beat D Reeve (Hickleton), light middleweight; P Calladine (Hickleton) beat T Connelly (Denaby and Kirby) welterweight; S Joyce (Denaby kb) beat S Smith Pitsmoor, Junior contests; A Matthews (Steel Peach and Tozer) Junior contests and P O’Rorke (Denaby kb) beat Faulkner (Bullcroft)
