Carrol’s a Magazine Editor at 15

Carol Ruane, a 15 years old Conisbrough schoolgirl, had her first experience as an editor recently when single-handed, she produced a 22 page magazine in just one week.

At the time Carol, who lives at 81 Old Road, Conisbrough, was studying writing and authorship on a West Riding Youth Service Arts course at Pateley Bridge, near Harrogate.

Carol, a pupil at the Sheffield Notre Dame High School and a member of Denaby Tom Hill Youth Club, was the only student on that particular section of the article, which lasted a week – the time available for Carol to produce the magazine.

This unique publication is entitled “ No comment,” and has as its first and last headline, “Bridge stolen at Pateley.”

The story of the “missing” Pateley Bridge features prominently, along with progress report from other sections of the course, submitted by all the members, and varied general articles

The magazine ends in the best traditions of magazine production with a “problem letter page.” Carol told the “South Yorkshire Times” that this was the first time she had attempted anything of this kind. “But I thoroughly enjoyed doing it,” she added.

Although Carol has no plans for entering into journalism proper, she has been appointed joint editor of the projected Tom Hill Youth Club magazine, which may make its appearance in October, a task she says she’s looking forward to. She may be encouraged by the fact that “No Comment” was a “sell-out”
