Mexborough & Swinton Times – Friday 05 October 1883
Case Dismissed
Thomas Brindle, aged 10, and John Brindle, aged 7, living at Conisboro’, were charged with cruelly ill-treating nine calves.
The Magistrates declined to hear the charge against John, as he was too young to be tried for such an offence.
Wm. Rich. Horsfield, farmer, Conisboro’, stated that he had sustained considerable damage through lads trespassing in his fields and ill-using his calves.
Harry Sunderland, 8 years old, was called and deposed that on the 19th ult. he saw Thomas running the prosecutor’s calves about in the field and hurting them with sticks.
Annie Baker was called for the defence and stated that she was in a lane adjoining the field and did not see Thomas in the field at all.
The Magistrates dismissed the case as there had been no cruelty proved.
