Castle Club Angling.

Castle Club Angling.

There were great rejoicing at the Castle Club on Saturday evening when the angling team brought home an handsome cup which they have won out right after many attempts to make the Trophy their own.

This silver cup was offered by the Club Union for competition amongst teams of the Doncaster and District Branch and on Saturday at Keadby, 31 teams took part in the annual contest.

Though there was some rain at the start, nothing could damp the ardour of the fishermen, and chief interest centred round the doings of Conisborough, Hexthorpe and Wheatley teams.

Previous to Saturday the three teams had all had their names engraved on the trophy twice, and the winning of the cup three times, not necessarily consecutive, made it the property of the team fulfilling these conditions.

The weigh in found our team filling first place, but Stainforth were only about 1 ounce behind. Conisborough were within an ace of securing the cup last year, only going under, to Hexthorpe by a quarter of an ounce.

Conisborough’s successes were obtained previously in 1914 and 1921.

This year’s winning team consisted of Messrs J.T.Hinchcliffe, J.T.Taylor, G.Humphries, and G.Wilkinson.

It was something of a coincidence that on Saturday the Castle bowling team sent back the Kelly Cup which they won last year, ready for this season’s contest.
