Castle Lighting
The Castle lighting continues to attract crowds, and on Sunday evening there was the biggest assembly ever seen in the vicinity. The crowd packed the grounds and adjoining streets, where the throng was so dense that one could have walked on the heads of the spectators.
As eight o’clock ‘approached the lights were switched on and off. A maroon was fired from the top of the keep and then rang out a fanfare from trumpeters. On came the lights, and then followed a concert by the military band of the Mexborough British Legion, conducted by Mr H Bird.
So many persons were present that the music was inaudible to those on the fringe of the crowd. The band collection was £3 19s. 8 ½ d., practically all in copper, and considering the number present the collection did not err on the side of generality. However, the band was satisfied, and another concert is expected on Sunday.
