Doncaster Road

The houses in Doncaster Road, from the crossings to ‘Breezes Row’ had 2 rooms upstairs, 2 rooms downstairs, a small backyard with outside toilet and coalplace, they were built in one block of 18, 1 block of 20 and one block of 22 houses in 1868.

The block of 12 houses on ‘Breezes Row’ was built in the same year and had 2 rooms plus an attic upstairs, 2 rooms downstairs, a small backyard with toilet outside and coalplace.

Water was installed in 1902. Gas supplied by the Colliery Co. was used from 1878 to 1951 when electricity was installed, houses were being emptied for demolition in Feb. 1966 and demolition took place in 1967.

The houses at the other side of Doncaster Road from Newtons to Kilnhurst Street were of 2 types. There were houses with 3 rooms upstairs, 3 rooms downstairs, a small backyard with outside toilet and coalplace.

These were built in one block of 10, 1 block of 11 and 1 block of 12 houses in 1898. The others had 2 rooms upstairs, 2 rooms downstairs, a small backyard with outside toilet and coalplace and also built in 1898, in one block of 5, 1 block of 8 and 1 block of 17 houses.

Water was laid on in 1902. Gas supplied by the Colliery Co. was used from 1898 to 1951 when electricity was installed. Demolition of the houses took place in 1968.
