Checkweigh Ballot

The men at the Denaby Main Colliery held their first ballot on Tuesday in the election for a checkweighman to succeed the late Mr G.A. Chatfield who had held the position for 10 years.

From the 30 candidates who stood for the position on Tuesday the first five went forward to the second ballot. The total number of votes polled was 882, of which seven were spoiled papers.

The first five were:

Arthur Roberts (former Conisborough Urban Council member and former West Riding county council for the Conisborough Division) 155

Herbert Madin 106

Tom Shepard (president of the Denaby branch of the Y.M.A and Conisborough Councillor) 95

Samuel Stubbs 79

James C MacFarlane (Conisborough Urban Council and delegate of the Denaby Main Y. M.A.) 46

The other candidates polled as follows:

Jack Humphreys (Conisborough Councillor) 40, Harry Goddard 37, Arthur Tingle 27, John Feeney 26, Frank Hansen 22, Wilfred Rigby 22, Percy Riley 20, W.G. Styling 19, George Humphreys 18, William Johnson 18, Sid Betteridge 16, Robert H Shephard (Chairman, Conisborough Council) 16, A Backhouse senior 15, George Venables 14, Jerry Auty 13, R Corney 13, F Chatfield 13, Abe Oakley 12, Fred Goulding 10, Percy Shakeshaft 8, John Kelly 7, Paddy McDonald 6, John McDonald 4, Fred Oakley 3, T Betteridge 1

The second ballot was held yesterday with the following results:

Arthur Roberts 278, Samuel Stubbs 271, Herbert Madin 183, Tom Shepard 131, JC MacFarlane 35.

Messrs Roberts and Stubbs now go forward for a third ballot we is to be held next Tuesday.
