Manchester Courier – Saturday 10 December 1892

Child Murder at Mexborough.

What is apparently a case of child murder has been brought to light at Mexborough by the discovery of the body of a newly-born babe the canal near the old ferry to Denaby.

To all appearances the body had not been in the water many hours when found. There was no clothing on the body, which was weighted underneath the arms with two stones, tied by a piece of cord.

The discovery was made by the keeper of the swing-bridge close the ferry, Hewitt by name, on Sunday morning, and he took the body out, and went and gave information respecting it to Inspector Barratt at the Bank-street Police Station. The inspector and his constables have since been engaged making inquiries into the matter, but so far the whole thing mystery.

Many people come into Mexborough on Saturday night, and it is believed that the murderess lives in the neighbourhood.

The inquest is fixed for this morning at the Ferry Boat Inn, where the infant lies.
