Cigarette in Pit

Conisbrough Haulage Hand Punished

Declaring that he could not pay the fine of £5 imposed, George W. Edwards (17), haulage hand, of Conis, brough, was at Doncaster West Riding Court on Saturday, sent to prison for three months for taking a cigarette in his pocket into Denaby Main Colliery.

Mr. A. S. Furniss, prosecuting, said that after the cigarette had been found in his pocket Edwards was told to go to the manager and  give his explanation. He replied that he could not be bothered.

Furniss said that in July Edwards was fined £6 for wilful disobedience of orders and inciting. Since then he had been reported for general misconduct in the pit.

Edwards said that when anything happened at the pit he was blamed.
