“We hope to combine the three shades of political opinion and to represent the views of the householders,” said a spokesman for a proposed Citizens’ Association of Denaby and Conisbrough, which held its inaugural meeting at the Lord Conyers Hotel, Conisbrough, on Monday.

“All Councils need opposition to maintain a healthy service to the public. The Labour Party has held sway in Conisbrough without any opposition for too many years, and it is the intention of this proposed Association to create a healthy opposition,” he added.

The Problems

At the meeting on Monday there were 19 present representing householders from Conisbrough and Denaby, and they were addressed by Coun. R. Bell (Citizens’ Association,        Mexborough), who outlined the problems behind forming a party.

“Our main object is to establish a body opposing the Council and so keep it on its toes. Even if we have no members elected we shall not be disappointed if we have kept the Council alert to its duties,” continued the spokesman.

“The idea of an opposition party had arisen over the last few months and the intention to hold a meeting had been passed around by word of mouth,” said the spokesman, “and there are promises for a much bigger support next Thursday night, October 24th, again at the Lord Conyers.”

Officials — and a Name

No officials hate as yet been elected; that is to be left to the main body on Thursday night, which will also choose a name for the Association. The spokesman said there was a sincere feeling that Conisbrough needed an active opposition, and stressed the argument that they would he representing householders and not house owners, and that they would have no political ties. Interested persons are invited to attend next Thursday night’s meeting at the Lord Conyers.
