Claims For Rescue.
Conisborough Council Perplexed Over Fire Scenes.
The Conisborough Council last night made another attempt to clear up the confusion arising from claims for the rescue of old couple from a Denaby fire, which resulted in the subsequent death of the man saved. The names of Frank Cousins, Walter Rose, and Richard Riley had been recommended to be brought before the notice of the Royal Humane Society.
Later, however, several persons were mentioned as being concerned in the rescue, but at a previous meeting a Councillor stated that one of the men, whose name had been put forward, had not even gone into the house.
Last night a letter was read recommending yet another man, and the Council decided to invite the persons making the recommendation to attend and give their version of the rescue scenes.
Mr. E. Collins reported that the Council intended making application to build a further 22 houses, a scheme that would provide work for the unemployed. This raised the question by Mr. Gillott whether there was any truth in the statement that local labour had been dismissed, while outside labour had been employed. The Surveyor denied this.
Mr. J. I. Webster thought that the Council should investigate allegations that a Rotherham Corporation bus driver, after stopping at Conisborough, had driven on without picking up some miners who were in their pit clothes. The Clerk the Council is to write to the Rotherham Corporation
