Relief at Conisborough
Urban Council take Charge.
At a meeting held at the welfare club, Denaby Main, yesterday, arrangements were made for the relief of distress. Hitherto relief has been administered through the Labour Party and the miner’s branches, but the Urban Council have now been called in and at yesterday’s meeting the Chairman of the Council, Mr W. B. Wells, was elected chairman and Mr T. Hill, vice-chairman. Mr W.A. Twelves, is the treasurer, Mr Crowther of Conisborough secretary, and Mr G. Smith assistant secretary.
Mr A. Roberts, C. C., said the committee was non-party and undenominational and was to relieve all case of distress. Steps would be taken in each ward to ascertain the extent of distress. This work would be undertaken by the ward committees, on which sat three representatives of the council, with one councillor as chairman.’ Reports will be handed to the central committee. They would have a central store, from which each ward committee would obtain supplies for distribution.
As there were certain miners working at Denaby and Cadeby who lived in Mexborough , it was resolved that 20% of all monies collected for the workmen at those pits should be forwarded to Mexborough for distribution amongst those men and their families.
