Colleagues’ Tributes to Pit Fatality Victim
Former Midland League footballer, Fred Asquith, of 20, Thirlwall Avenue, Conisbrough, was fatally injured in an accident at Denaby Main Colliery last Friday. He died in Doncaster Royal Infirmary.
Asquith, who was 31 and married, was employed at the colliery as a ripper, and had worked there since 1946, when he came out of the army. He left his home last Thursday night to work a night shift, and as he often worked over time his wife did not expect him home early.
She was told of his accident next morning, and on reaching the Infirmary learned that her husband had died.
Asquith was struck by a fall of stone and dirt from the roof while working in the Parkgate seam. He suffered injuries to his back and legs.
He joined Denaby United to play full-back with their Midland League team in 1946, and after two seasons with Denaby he moved to Frickley Colliery, another Midland League Club.
He later played with Bentley Colliery, and this season was in Minor League football with Denaby Rangers.
Guests at Denaby United’s Jubilee dinner last Friday, and teams and officials in the friendly match at Tickhill Square between Denaby and Scunthorpe United on Monday, stood in silence in his memory.
The inquest was opened on Asquith on Monday by the Doncaster District Deputy Coroner (Mr. C. R. Marshall) and was adjourned after evidence of identification had been given by the widow, Mrs. Ellen Jane Asquith.
The inquest will be resumed in Doncaster Guildhall on Thursday, May 15th, at 3 p.m. before a jury.
