Colliers and their Earnings

At the Doncaster County Court yesterday, there were several judgment summonses in which miners’ wives appeared, and the plea often was inability to pay.

His Honour remarked that miners could earn good wages, and that debt could be avoided.

In one case, in particular, he pointed and that a man had been paid 30s. by the Denaby Main Colliery Company, and only took his wife 19s., reserving for himself 11s., as his Honour said, ” to go to the public house with, and proving himself one of those persons who spent money on amusing himself instead of making proper provision for his family.”
