Colliery Accident

Joe Morton, a married man, aged 41, of Castle Grove Terrace, Conisborough, was seriously injured by a fall of stone while working in the No. 2 pit, Cadeby Main, shortly after 12 o’clock, yesterday morning.

He was working in a stall and attempting to remove the pinch-bar when the roof suddenly collapsed and buried him beneath the debris. Fortunately, large portions of stone permitted a slight current of air, and Morton was extricated after 20 minutes of strenuous efforts on the part of his workmates.

Although badly injured in the back, Morton never lost consciousness. He was removed to the Fullerton Hospital, where the wound in the back was stitched and the nasty scalp and face cuts attended to. He is progressing favourably.
