Concert will boost his fund raising

A Denaby man turned “Father Christmas” could bring the total money he has raised for charity in about six months to close on £50 with his third fund raising variety show next week.
The show, featuring many well-known club acts – mainly singers – will be staged next Friday (May 7th) at Denaby St. Alban’s Club by Mr. Fred Ward of 9, Scawby Street, Denaby.

All the artists have given their services free, and the money Mr. Ward raises from the shilling-a-head admission fee will be divided between the Parish Church and the Catholic Church at Denaby.

“I set out organising these concerts simply because I wanted to help people,” Mr. Ward told the “South Yorkshire Times” on Monday.
“I don’t get anything out of it myself except the pleasure of seeing the cheque handed over – I even let somebody else do that,” added Mr. Ward, who seemed reluctant to step into the limelight.

The first two charity shows, both held at the Denaby Main Hotel, raised £20 and £14 respectively for disabled persons’ and deaf children’s charities. Mr. Ward expects this third show, featuring locally and nationally renowned organist George Ryder, to be the “best of the lot”. The curtain goes up at 7.30 on Friday next.

He added, “If it is a success I shall probably hold another more ambitious one as soon as possible.
