The Career of Conisboro’

I am sorry to say things do not improve for Conisboro’ as time goes on. They have yet to win a match, yet even look like winning one. They were at home once more on Saturday, their opponents being Monk Bretton, who, of course, for such is Conisboro’s luck, won the toss. They stayed at the wicket until their innings was completed for a total of 132, being, I suppose, confident of getting Conisboro’ out cheaply when six of the visiting team had made double figures, and three of them had scored over 20. Their confidence in their ability to dismiss Conisboro’ easily was justified, for the Castle villagers scored only 39 between them, E. Robinson with 12, and Nesbit with seven, being the principal scorers for Conisboro’.

Sad, Sad Conisboro’!

A correspondent who witnessed the Conisboro’ v. Monk Bretton match writes: “Really there seems little hope for Conisboro’, whose consistency in losing matches gives little joy to the club and its supporters, however the visiting teams to the Castle village look on the outing in the light of a picnic match with valuable League points a dead snip.

On Saturday another game went to the opposition, Monk Bretton in this instance, a one-sided struggle seeing Conisboro’ put out of the hunt to the tune of 93 runs. Monk Bretton batted first, and save that Shaw was badly run out after scoring a single, a good start was made, nearly 60 runs going up for the loss of three wickets.

Then the game veered round in favour of the Conisboro’ bowlers, of whom Harrison was trundling in creditable style, using his head, keeping a good length, and rattling the sticks at intervals. Six more wickets fell at little cost, and there were actually nine down for 92.

It was at this point that Conisboro’ should have pressed home the changing advantage, but a prolific last wicket stand between Pymm and Crow saw 40 more runs added, the final aggregate, 132, being admittedly beyond the powers of the Conisboro’ batsmen.

Harrison came out with the best analysis, five wickets for 50 runs, and just at the time the Conisboro’ bowlers were in the ascendancy, from the fall of the third to the capture of the ninth wicket, the home fielding was positively brilliant, howbeit the same standard was not noticeable at the start and close of the innings.

Marlboro’ failed to reproduce his deadliness with the ball that marked his bowling against the same team the previous week, whilst Nesbit, although erratic, made a distinctly useful change, his express accounting for two wickets.

As for the Conisboro’ innings, it was too sad for words. True, the team had a discouraging send-off, Harrison being given caught out when E. J. Smith took the ball at the ground — a flagrantly bad decision — but for all that the team curled up without making even a show of fight, only E. Robinson managing to reach double figures in a miserable total of 39 all told.

J. C. Smith, with five wickets for 11 runs, and Sweatman with five for 25, had a rare afternoon with the ball, but it must be said the Conisboro’ batsmen aided them by a singular display of ineptitude.

Perhaps the most noticeable feature of the match was the number of Smiths and Robinsons playing, four of the former figuring on the Monk Bretton side, and two of the latter — one while Denaby men — on the latter.

“These are sad days for Conisboro’, but while ‘there’s life there’s hope,’ and the club may even yet spring a sensation in the local cricket world.”
