Conisboro’ Man’s Arrest
A New Conisboro’ miner named William Naughton was charged with obstructing the police at Conisboro’ on the 25th January.
P.C. Rutter stated that at 10.15 on that date he and P.C. Barnes were apprehending a man in Blythe Street for being drunk and disorderly when the defendant came up, assumed a fighting attitude, and said they should not take the man to the police station.
He caused a hostile crowd to assemble, got hold of the man and tried to pull him away several times. A man out of the crowd eventually came forward and assisted the police, whereupon the defendant struck him a violent blow in the face, knocking him down.
They had great difficulty in getting the handcuffs on the man owing to the defendant’s conduct, and it took them a long time to take him to the police station.
P.C. Barnes corroborated.
The defendant’s father appeared and said his son could not come because he was working. It was stated there were three previous convictions against the defendant for obstructing the police.
The magistrates decided to issue a warrant.
