Conisboro’ Miners at Doncaster

On Monday, at the Doncaster Borough Court, Isaiah Gough, miner, Conisboro’, was charged with assaulting Wm. Barlow, labourer, Milner’s Yard, in French Gate on Sunday night.

When near Jackson’s coffee house defendant got behind Barlow and struck him in the neck, knocking him down against the railings, and whilst he was getting up another man struck him from behind.

He did not know either of the men personally, and had not spoken to them.

Inspector Clayton stated that he had never seen such a disgraceful row in French Gate before. There was a gang of miners from Mexbro’ and Denaby, and they were knocking everybody down in the street.

John Smith, miner, was charged with assaulting James Johnson, of the White Swan Yard.

Complainant said he was crossing the road to his house when defendant struck him and knocked him down without saying a word. He had not seen the man before.

It was also stated that defendant struck a married woman, named Clara Harper, and though she failed to identify him, three other witnesses spoke to his identity.

Gough was fined 30s., including costs, or 14 days to prison, and Smith £3 7s., including costs, or 28 days to prison.

At Doncaster on Monday, John Thomas Hague, miner, Conisboro’, was charged with being drunk and assaulting a boy named Thomas Burkitt, who lived in South Street.

Complainant was in the market on Saturday night, when someone threw a banana skin at defendant, who ran after the boy and struck him on the head with a stick, and then knocked him down.

A fine of 15s. and costs was imposed.
