Conisboro’ Miner’s Deception

A 27 year old Conisbrough miner, John L. Craven, was fined £5 at Doncaster, on Saturday. for obtaining £3 4s. from the Public Assistance Committee by false pretences.

Harold Sidebottom, Relieving Officer, said defendant attended his office on June 28th and was paid

£2 3s. 6d. each week for the following fortnight. Witness discovered later that defendant had worked eight days during that period, earning 64s.

In Court, Craven said he had not worked for four years, and his children needed some shoes.

The Chairman (Mr. Mark Nokes) said the Bench were not going to send Craven to prison because the country needed coal.
