Conisboro’ U.D.C. – County Areas Conference.

August 1930

Mexborough & Swinton Times – Friday 15 August 1930

County Areas Conference.

The Clerk gave an interesting report on the County Areas Conference at Leeds.

The County Council stated they had not prepared any scheme for the amalgamation of districts and were prepared to receive suggestions.

On behalf of Bolton-on-Dearne Mr. J. Ledger Hawksworth said a scheme for the inclusion of certain adjoining districts had been prepared by that authority, and had been before the County. Council for some time.

Speaking for Conisborough, he (Mr. Baker), said conferences were held between Mexborough and Conisborough but negotiations were broken of by mutual consent. He outlined a scheme for the inclusion of  Edlington and Warmsworth, which Mr. Marshall (Doncaster R.D.C.) described as ill advised, ill-conceived and selfish.”

For Mexborough, Mr. W. Frow repudiated the statement that negotiations with Conisborough were broken off by mutual consent. Had they continued he thought some good would have come of them. Mexborough required land for building and he suggested the taking in of Adwick-on- Deane.

Rawmarsb had a scheme for taking in adjoining districts, but the speeches of the Swinton and Wath representatives revealed no definite proposals. Mr. Gomersall challenged the statement of Mr. Frow that negotiations were not broken off by mutual consent. Mr. Frow was not present when the amalgamation committee met, and Mr. Gomersall was rather surprised that he should have made such a statement.

“Whatever report he has I think it was by mutual consent that the negotiations were dropped.”

Exception to Mr. Marshall ‘s remarks were taken by Mr. J. Webster. The Clerk said he was not in a position to reply to them at the conference, as he spoke before Mr. Marshal.
