Conisborough Betting House
Bookmaker Fined £20
At Doncaster on Saturday Stanley J Peake (30), min4r 2 Denaby Avenue, Conisborough, was fined £5 for keeping a betting house.
Mr C Phythian (prosecutor) said observations were kept on the house through a period of two hours on the afternoon of June 22, 23rd and 24s, and the number of persons seem to entry were 12 men, eight women and one girl; 11 men eight women two boys and two girls; and 11 men, five women, two boys and two girls respectively.
The house was raided on July 3 and one man, three women and one boy were found in it. Five slips related to 16 bets, varying from threepence to 2 shillings and cash amounting to £3 were found.
When the warrant was read over to him Peake said, “I am running this place for someone else. I would like you to leave my missus out of it .” In reply to the charge he said, “I expect you know who I am taking them for.”
Defendant said he was out of work and trying to earn a few shillings.
Low Road Case
At the same court Arthur Elmer (56), bookmaker, 2 Low Road, Conisborough was fined £20 for keeping a betting house. He had three previous convictions for betting offences.
On defendant’s behalf, it was stated that owing to war service he was partially blind and was unable to carry on his work as a miner. He obtained work as a club steward, and on losing that post was unable to draw unemployment benefit.
Four “resorters,” John G Ramsay, miner, Jane Forster, Catherine Wood and Hettie Jones, all married, of Conisborough were bound over in £5 for 12 months and ordered to pay 4 shillings costs.
