Hospital Demonstration
It was a Frosty Sunday for the 44th Conisboro’ Hospital Demonstration. “Has kept fine for fourteen successive years,” says Mr. G. Harrison. Mexborough Military Band and Denaby Ambulance Band headed two processions which paraded the streets of Old Conisborough and Conaby. A service was held in the Welfare Field, Dr. W. J. McClure presiding. Ald. E. Dunn (Maltby), said he was doubly glad to take part in the demonstration, because as well as speaking for the hospitals, he was speaking with Mr. T. Williams, M.P., “back again in the thick of the fight” after his illness.
Concerning hospital maintenance there were two schools of thought. Some thought hospitals should be supported by voluntary contributions, others that they be rate-aided or State-aided. Until another system was adopted, voluntary contributors should recognise their obligation. Mr. C. H. Aldous (Sheffield Royal Infirmary), mentioned that the Godfrey Walker Convalescent Home at Conisborough cost 3s. 1d. per hour to run, and the income was only 1s. 2d.
The Rev. A. C. Painter (Doncaster Royal Infirmary), made an appeal on behalf of that institution. Mr. Tom Williams, M.P., proposed a vote of thanks, and said the success of the demonstration was largely due to the enthusiasm of the secretary, Mr. E. M. Burton. Mr. G. Harrison seconded. Prayers were offered by the Vicar (the Rev. W. J. T. Pascoe), and the Rev. W. Raby. Together with the proceeds from flower days, dances and concerts, about £60 was realised, £10 increase on last year.
The Hospital Demonstration Committee attended service at the Parish Church on Sunday morning.
