Conisborough Notes – An Ancient Chapel

It may not be generally known that a very ancient chapel once stood near the Don opposite Conisboro’. It was founded in very early days by a Fitzwilliam.

The exact site cannot be traced, but the late Mr. Allport, of Conisboro’, and myself, with the aid of an old print and other data, located it as being near the signal box on the railway, between Cadeby Colliery and the old tunnel.

I have before me the notes of a writer 125 years ago. The chapel had been in ruins for generations, and he says’ that all admirers of antiquity would regret to know that the place had been demolished, and the materials had been used to repair farm houses and barns in Cadeby.

The work in it was, I believe, of very good workmanship, and a chantry had been founded there by John Fitzwillianm, who was buried in Sprotboro’ Church A.D. 1420. When utilising such materials it was usual to plaster over them, but I should be pleased it any residents of the village, if they know of any carved or lettered stones, would communicate with me, through the editor of this paper.
