Conisborough Notes

Looking across the Denaby and Cadeby Club’s cricket square last week I wondered if a new bed of coal had been struck, for extensive excavations were going on. I was informed that in the corner near the score box there was very little subsoil over the cinders and that a moss had appeared which had threatened to eradicate the turf unless drastic measures were taken, and so the whole area is being dug out.

The harvest festival season is upon us and this year the thanksgiving will be more appropriate than last for then most of the services were held before “all was safely gathered in.” The dry period has resulted in most of the corn crops garnered, though in N.W. Yorkshire I saw several uncut fields last week-end.

The tan yard on Sheffield Road has only recently been cleared of the apparatus of road-making firm and now another firm has installed its plant for the preparation of the road surface. It is stated that the preparation made there is to be utilised on the section of the Warmsworth road which is being widened, and on which work has proceeded very rapidly. A fine stretch of straight road is promised here very soon.

The swimming gala on Saturday was a great success and resulted in Balby Street School retaining the shield won last year when the trophy was first competed for. A feature was the fine performance of three girls, E. Payling, G. Cuttle and L. Croft, who collected about 60 per cent, of the marks won by the school. The shield is to be presented to-night (Friday) at Balby Street. Councillor W. B. Wells and the committee extend a hearty invitation to all interested to witness the presentation. Mr. W. Watson headmaster of Rossington Street School, is to preside.
