Conisborough Notes

Vandalism

The following is an extract from the parish magazine: “We are sorry to see that some fool who has no respect for ancient buildings, not even when they are sacred, could not forbear cutting in 2 inch letters the name W. Ellis, and the date, 1935, upon the east wall of the porch. Desecrate may not have cut his own name, of course, but whoever the culprit is ought to be ashamed of himself.

To keep the stonework in good condition against decay and atmospheric corrosion is an ever present problem for us at Conisborough, but at least we might be spared the idiotic attempts at self-expression of a mental degenerate.” Further comment is needless.

Collision

Slight damage was caused when two vehicles collided at the junction of Old Road and Garden Lane on Tuesday morning.

One lorry owned by the Denaby and Cadeby Home Coal Carting Committee, and driven by John William Townsley, of Conan Road, had a damaged rear wheel, and the other, a van owned by Messrs. H. W. Crick, a firm of Sheffield bakers, and driven by Wm. Crossley, of Southey hall drive, Sheffield, sustained damage to the front wheel.

Allotments Water

The question of water supply from Castle Farm allotments appears at last to be settled, and the committee has decided to proceed with the work as the result of the referendum.

The tenants voted with the following result:

In favour of water being laid on, 95; against 64; neutral 4; against, but willing to conform to majority vote, 41. There are 187 tenants and 163 papers were returned.

For gardens figures show: in favour 126; against, 70 neutral or no reply, 48; against but willing to conform to majority vote, 44; number of gardens, 244
