Conisborough Parish Council

The usually monthly meeting on this Council was held on Tuesday evening last, the members present being: Messrs Holmes (chairman), Butcher, Mosby, Robertson, Smithson, Hirst, Roebuck and Brooks

The minutes of last meeting were confirmed on the motion Mr Rowan.

A letter was read from the Clerk to the district council stating that the question water supply should have early attention, and the question of fencing on off the cliffs side had been sent to the County Council for attention, that instructions have been given for the brook to be cleaned out; and further they required to know more particulars about street lighting.

Mr Holmes: We asked for the lamps to be lighted further into the season than previously. About Good Friday last we required the light as much as any part of the year. I think we may safely fix the month of April.

The Clerk: They will also require the number of lamps we require lighting all night.

Mr Mosby: As to road lighting all night, where is their Street we can do without?

Mr Holmes: The question is is it a public necessity?

Mr Butcher: There will be 300 People going down yonder road in the morning to Denaby, Cadeby, and the glass works.

Mr Holmes: Do we require them all lighting?

Mr Butcher: As all ratepayers have to pay their share it is only right we should have the benefit. I will propose that we asked for lighting to be continued to the end of April.

Mr Brooks: I will second that.

Mr Smithson: I will move as an amendment that we asked to the middle of April.

Mr Ogley: I second that.

On being put to the vote the resolution was carried by a majority of four.

Mr Holmes: It is only necessary to say that we require all the lamps lighting throughout the night.

Mr Butcher: I propose that

Mr Mosby: I will seconded.

The same was carried unanimously.

Mr Smithson: I shall propose that the Clerk asked for lamps to be fixed in Park Road. (generally known as Rock House Lane) It was a road very much used, and would be more if it was lighted

Mr Holmes: There are only 11 houses on the road at present.

Mr Smithson: There will be 50 before the summer is out

Mr Mosby: It’s a road that certainly requires lighting, and there are a lot more houses at the far end that Mr Holmes has forgotten.

Mr Smithson: We ought to asked the lamps to be fixed.

Mr Mosby seconded and it was carried unanimously.

New Member:

Mr Butcher: Has Mr Nesbitt accepted the vacant seat on this Council?

The Clerk: I don’t think he’s accepted. He told me he thought that he should not accept

Mr Brook: He told me definitely should not.

Mr Hirst: I am sorry because we shall not get any cheap ale now. (Laughter)

Mr Holmes: we shall see if he is here by the end of this meeting to sign; if not the seat will be vacant.

Mr John Shaw resigned his position as a member of the Fire Brigade, and on the recommendation of Capt Jones, Arthur Dickinson was elected in his place.

A long discussion took place as to the wages paid by the Council to men employed by them to make some road repairs. The Council decided to pay each man four shillings per day, but the committee appointed to carry out the work had paid two of the men only 3s 6d per day. Some of the councillors condemned this as sweating, but the committee’s action was warmly defended by Mr Holmes, as one of the committee, who contended that the men to be paid what they were worth, not necessarily four shillings per day. The men were well satisfied with wages paid.

A discussion also took place on the allotments question, but decision was deferred until the next meeting.

Urban Powers

The council decided to hold a special meeting on the subject at an early date, the time to be arranged by Mr Robinson.

The letter was also read from the Doncaster District Council, stating that they had given their severe instructions to have the necessary repairs done in Station Road, and that arrangements were being made for the causeway at New Conisborough to be
