Conisborough Pleasant Sunday Afternoon

Last Tuesday afternoon the annual tea and meeting, under the auspices of this class, was held in the Wesleyan Schoolroom. A well-served tea was provided by Mrs. John Meggitt, when over 200 took part, and through the generosity of some of the friends of the movement about 40 old people had a free tea given them. The tea was served in an expeditious manner, and the following is a list of trayholders:—Mesdames Birch, R. Everatt, J. K. Bateson, Thompson, S. Pagdin, E. Taylor, J. Marsh, H. Booth, and G. B. Appleyard.

After tea a public meeting was held, during which the prizes for the past session were awarded to the successful members, and speeches made by several friends of the movement, Mr. R. H. Sharp occupying the chair. In a commendably brief speech Mr. Sharp stated that the class had now begun its eighth session and the fifth year of its existence, and that their numbers were increasing, and also that the enthusiasm and interest of the members was on the increase, and the motto of each member seemed to be to do what little he or she could for the well-being of the class. He regretted that neither of the resident ministers was with them, and expressed surprise that they held aloof from them; he, however, felt sure that they had the approval of him they were about doing good.

The Secretary, Mr. J. Pagdin, then read the report, as follows:—During the session just closed, comprising 26 weeks, they had a registered membership of 180, out of which 158 had entitled themselves to receive first-class prizes. The receipts for the past year had been £26 2s. 2d., and their expenses during that time £10 11s. 10d. (which included £1 1s. given away during the late strike), leaving £15 10s. 4d. to provide books for the members. The report was considered highly satisfactory.

Mr. J. Brocklesby (president), in the course of a very interesting speech, said that since they commenced over 300 Gospel addresses had been given, and it was not possible to compute the good that had resulted therefrom. They had also distributed over 2,000 volumes of pure literature, which will do much good.

Mr. A. S. O. Birch (Sheffield) then addressed the meeting at some length. He then distributed the prizes to the members.

During the evening Miss Bateson sang, “Flower of Paradise”; Mr. T. Pagdin, “Daddy”; and Mr. T. Stacey, “Gather them in.” The friends of the movement are to be congratulated for the excellent way in which the programme of the evening was gone through.

Appended is a list of the successful members, who received books, which were admirably selected:—E. Jones, E. Mee, G. High, J. H. Armitage, C. Thompson, J. Meggitt, My. Crookes, Mrs. J.
