Mexborough and Swinton Times June 4 1897
Conisborough School Board
The monthly meeting was held last night, Mr GB Dufton presiding.
The new school
M Walker said in reference to the above question it would be better to have a special meeting next Thursday evening. He considered that before a new school was built they should have a full board, and a unanimous vote. If they had a special meeting they could thrash the matter thoroughly out.
The Chairman: Well that suit you gentlemen?
Mr Walker: the question is progressing favourably. I think there are some communications to lay before the board.
The Clerk stated that he had a communication from the Education Department dated May 6. It was in reply to a letter from him dated 18 April. They asked how the matter was progressing. He had written to say that the Board were in negotiations with two land proprietors, and he would let them out further particulars later, or as soon as possible.
Mr Walker: I have been once to London, and twice to Leeds over it. I don’t know why going to pay my expenses. Who pays yours going to Sheffield Mr Pagdin? (Laughter).
Mr Pagdin: I don’t know, as yet.
Will it require a resolution for the special meeting on Thursday night?
Mr Pagdin: I think we had better have a resolution. If you like I will move one.
Mr Walker: I will move it.
Mr Pagdin I will second that
The resolution was carried.
School Extension
Mr Pagdin stated that a committee comprising the Chairman, Clerk Mr Marsh and himself had been round examining the school to see what extra accommodation could be found to relieve them a little. The cloakroom had been spoken by the Department in the yearly report, and something would have to be done. If the inspector was to make his appearance he would complain of it.
With respect the boys department, they would have to try and obtain a portion of the land now occupied by Mr Smith, and owned by Mr Waterhouse. It was suggested that the Board Room and the cloakroom be thrown into one, and a large classroom made of it. Further alterations were proposed and Mr Pagdin stated that Mr Harrington had run up a rough plan for the present.
Mr Walker: I shall object to the purchasing of any more land.
Mr Pagdin: He should be frightened to buy any more land if he knew what communications he had received from the landowners for the new school.
Mr Stacey: we shall be relieved appear when the new schools are erected.
Mr Tennant: would it be wise to leave this matter over until a special meeting?
Mr Stacey: Yes, I think it would be a lot better to leave it over.
Mr Walker: Yes, we don’t want to vote on this question tonight.
The Clerk stated that he had not measured the place. He could give them the probable cost.
Mr Walker: You cannot get to know the probable cost until Mr Waterhouse has been seen (laughter).
It was resolved to leave the matter into the special meeting.
