Mexborough & Swinton Times – Friday 06 January 1893

Conisborough School Board.

The monthly meeting of this Board was held last night in the Board Schools. There were present:—Messrs. Dutton (in the chair). J. Pagden, W. W. Norwood, S. Whitfield, and G. Kilner.

Attendance

The attendance officer said he had got the list for Denaby, and there were several cases where it would be safe to prosecute.

Mr. Whitfield said that as their officer was resigning, it would be better to leave the matter alone. Mr. Pagden said they wanted to know where they were leaving off, and where the new one would take on.

The attendance officer said the lists were not very bad.

New Teachers.

Mr James Wilson, Walton School, Brampton, Carlisle, accepted the post of assistant-master in the boys’ department; and in the infants’ department Miss Day, Sheffield, wrote stating she was prepared to start en January 9th.

On the motion of Mr. Norwood, seconded by Mr. Hillier, it was decided to make those appointments

New Desks

Mr. Smith wrote asking to draw the attention of the Board to a passage which appeared in Her Majesty’s Inspector’s report on the boys’ school—the one which said that care should be taken at no time to overcrowd the small class-room. As it was unlikely the present alterations would be finished before the examination in May he would be glad if they gave him six new desks for standard III.

Standard II, with an attendance of 56, had been in the room, and it only should give accommodation for 20. If that was allowed to continue he felt sure the inspector would reduce the organisation grant from 1s. 6d. to 1s.

Standard III, Numbered 36, which was a trifle above the capacity of the room but so little he thought the inspector would overlook it as the enlargements were projected. Desks would have to be obtained when the enlargements were completed, so that it was only getting a few beforehand.

It was decided, on the motion of Mr. Whitfield, seconded by Mr. Pagden, to obtain half a dozen desks.

Dancing and Education.

The use of the ConisbOrough school was asked for by a dancing class, with a Mr. J. H. Ramsden for secretary, for a “late night,” in which to hold a private quadrille assembly.

The Clerk said that the Board had refused the room when last applied for by the same party, because they wished to discourage long nights.

Mr. Whitfield asked where they were to draw the hue; they had a fashionable assembly a few days ago.

Mr. Norwood said that was public.

Mr. Whitfield thought a “late night ” meant till 12.

The Chairman said it did if they were working, but it was early for dancers.

The Clerk said the charge had been 15s. up till 12 o’clock, but thy cricket club had also had the rooms for 15 shillings.

The Chairman said that was because it was looked upon as for the public benefit.

Mr. Whitfield said the other was for the public benefit. He proposed that it be let to the applicants for 15s.

The Chairman said it would not pay for the gas.

Mr. Whitfield asked it they had been losing money when they let it.

The Chairman said they had not made much.

Mr Norwood seconded the resolution.

Mr. Kilner said the charge should be more than 15s.

Mr. Pagden moved as an amendment that the charge be £1 up to twelve o’clock, and 30s.. for all night. He afterwards reduced the amount to 25s. for all night, and Mr. Kilner seconded the amendment, which was carried by the chairman.

The Attendance Officer

The following gentlemen applied for the post of attendance officer in the place of Mr. Wilson, resigned. The amounts named are the salaries they asked:—
