Conisborough Sergeant’s Promotion

This week Sergeant Horton, who for the last five years have been stationed at Conisborough, is transferred to Pontefract to fill the vacant Inspectorship left by the departure of Inspector Sykes for Keighley.

Sergeant Horton is a Lincolnshire man. He was born on the Earl of Yarborough’s estate at Brocklesby, and belongs to a family which has long been connected with agricultural pursuits. He joined the police force at Otley when he was 19 and spent five years in division at Birling Wharfedale and at Ilkley, as police constable. While at Ilkley he was in the the then Inspector MacDonald, late superintendent at Rotherham, and now Barnsley.

His next five years with us was spent in the town of Otley as a police sergeant, and his third five years has been spent in charge of the important district of Conisborough.

When he came to Conisborough the district was very much unsettled, and the population itself seriously disturbed by the great Denaby and Cadeby colliery strike, which had only just concluded, and Sergeant Horton handled the situation with credit.

He has had time to make himself popular, and he will be much missed.

He carries with him to Pontefract the good wishes of the Conisborough people.
