Conisborough Town 9 Hexthorpe Wanderers 1

These teams met at Conisborough on Saturday, in the second round of the Sheffield and Hallamshire Minor Cup. on the Spring Grove ground. There was a good attendance of spectators.

Play was commenced ten minutes after the advertised time owing to the heavy rain. The home team won the toss, and defended the Mount Pleasant end.

Gornall started the ball, and the visitors took up the attack, but were driven back to midfield. Wood made a run and got close in, but was stopped by the backs. Even play followed for a short time, until Smith made a good ran on the right, and centring finely, the borne team scored amidst cheers.

Nettled at this reverse the visitors raced away, but the final shot was fruitless. The home forwards got away again, and after a bit of tine passing, Keys sent in a fast, low shot, which beat Petty a second time.

Front the kick-off the visitors gained a corner, which was well placed, and owing to a misunderstanding between F. Kelly and Tyas, they scored their first and only goal.

A party of the visitors’ supporters here entered the field, and cheered loudly, and amidst cries of Play-up, you’ll win,” the homesters pressed hard, and Petty had a warm time of it.

Several corners felt to the home team, but nothing came of them. Not to be denied, however, the home team kept up the pressure and scored their third goal. After this play became very exciting, the home team haring a little the best of the exchanges, and ultimately added two more points, making the game 5 – 1 at half-time.

On change of ends the home forwards raced away, but were pulled up by the backs. The homesters still continued to press, and playing a faultless game, soon scored four more points. When time was called the score was:—Conisborough. 9 goals. Hexthorpe 1 goal.
